Marlee Thomsen began working at Cornerstone Counseling and Wellness in December 2019. Through her experience, Marlee has become passionate about providing therapy for the following populations and presenting concerns:
-children with anxiety, OCD, specific phobias, emotion regulation difficulties, ADHD, and ASD.
-adolescents dealing with OCD, emetophobia/Specific phobia of vomiting, adjustment concerns, anxiety, depression, and emotional ups and downs of life.
-18+ individuals with OCD, emetophobia/specific phobia of vomiting, eating disorders, disordered eating, body image concerns, anxiety, depression, emotional ups and downs, and perinatal mental health concerns.

When working with children, Marlee will tailor a therapeutic plan informed by one or more of the following therapeutic approaches: play therapy informed by a child-centered approach and CBT, filial play therapy, Theraplay, and components of The Zones of Regulation curriculum. Marlee is drawn to these play interventions because she believes that play is the language of children. She has seen children work through many of their hurts and life experiences through the medium of toys and play.

Regardless of the intervention used, Marlee believes that the parent-child relationship is an essential part to a child’s healing process. Thus, if you are a parent of a child in therapy, you can expect to be involved in the therapeutic process by participating in regularly scheduled parent-only sessions that help equip parents for caring for their child amidst their challenges. As a Connected Families Certified Parent Coach,  Marlee can provide parenting support using the Connected Families Framework if desired. Marlee will work with you to figure out if this will be a service billable through insurance or self-pay.

Additionally, Marlee seeks to provide a warm and genuine space where clients can name and process their emotions as well learn to cope in adaptive ways using techniques from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (including Exposure and Response Prevention strategies). She finds joy in helping her clients feel heard and find hope as they become aware of their emotions, strengths and values. As a Christian, Marlee is able to provide a Biblically and clinically informed approach upon client request.

If she could summarize counseling up in one quote, it would be: “Thoughts disentangle themselves when they pass through the lips and fingertips.” Dawson Trotman.

Marlee has been a Licensed Clinical Social Worker Associate (LCSWA) since August 2019. She received her Master of Social Work from UNC-Chapel Hill in May 2017.

Marlee met her husband, Caleb, while working in the children's ministry at their local church and they have been married since 2017. In her free time, Marlee enjoys being active outdoors with her toddler boys and husband, reading, trying to grow plants, and being part of her church community.
